This La Catrina, or skeleton fairy has butterfly wings and tiny butterflies on her purple hat. The fairy is hand-painted in incredible detail. Butterflies, particularly the Monarch are important symbolism in Dia de los Muertos or Day of the Dead festivals. The return of the the Monarchs to Mexico coincides with the Day of the Dead which is celebrated Nov. 1 and 2. The local people have long believed the monarchs to be the returning spirits of their deceased relatives.
