The Best Plants for an Indoor Fairy Garden

Posted by Ronna Moore on 19th Apr 2018

Gardening season is fast approaching! It’s time to get your gardens prepared for the summer, planting sumptuous vegetables and beautiful perennials, showing off your unique personality and your love for the outdoors -- and the indoors.

Indoor gardening, and indoor fairy gardening in particular, has been growing in popularity over the years. Instead of purchasing plants that sprawl up and outwards to fill an outdoor garden, indoor garden plants are perfect for smaller, cozier spaces.

We want to make it easier for you to fill your indoor space as beautifully as you would put together your outdoor one. Here are our top 4 best plants for an indoor fairy garden. Pair these with a classic fairy cottage and you’re good to go!

Our Top 4 Picks for Indoor Fairy Garden Plants

Baby Tears

Baby Tears, or Soleirolia soleiolii, are a perfect addition to any indoor fairy garden. It consists of tiny leaves that grow for miles and miles. Be careful not to put this plant in direct sunlight or high temperatures, as it’s not good for its overall growth. Instead, baby tears grow best in moist, well-drained soil, and indirect sunlight.

Creeping Charlie

No indoor garden is complete without a Creeping Charlie, or Pilea nummulariifolia. It is bright green with crinkled leaves, and gives the impression of “creeping”. Think vines that creep and trail out of hanging baskets. In fact, similar to some vines, this plant is best in a slightly shady area with consistently moist soil. It’s the perfect house plant.

Elfin Herb

If it’s versatility you’re looking for, then the Elfin Herb, Cuphea hyssopifolia, is the plant for you. It takes well to pruning too. Many like to keep it trimmed for a lovely shrub shape, though it’s possible to play around with its shape for your fairy garden. Unlike the others on our list, this is one plant that is best grown outdoors and brought indoors.

Little Lady

This Little Lady (Adiantum microphyllum) definitely thrives indoors. While this plant can be grown outside as well, it requires full shade, as opposed to bright light indoors. This delicate plant is a classic maidenhair fern, so take care to provide moist soil for its optimal growth.
